The CVR(T) was originally designed as a reconnaissance vehicle during the Cold War.  Therefore, its protection levels were designed to match the perceived threat at the time; 7.62mm @ 360º, 0.50in @ 60º and Air Burst Fragments @ 10m.

Recent advances in small calibre armour piercing (AP) ammunition now mean that a 14.5mm round can go straight through a CVR(T) and come out the other side.  RPG’s can demolish a vehicle like a pack of cards and an IED, even relatively small, can wipe out a vehicle and crew.
